5 Things to Consider When Hiring a Photographer for Your Business

At this time of year many companies are thinking about hiring photographers for new headshots, new content marketing collateral, press-releases, or rebrands. Here are five things to consider when hiring a photographer for your business

1. Choosing a Photographer

Always use a professional photographer! Don’t ask an enthusiastic employee to ‘bring in their camera’ this ALWAYS ends up with a reshoot. Make sure your photographer has a body of work in within your niche. Ask questions about the shoot, make sure your photographer has a plan and is confident the shoot will be delivered on time and without issue.

2. Photographing Busy People

It’s imperative that the photographer has had experience with, and an understanding of, directors and business people as they are often busy with work and consider at that precise moment, portraits to be a hindrance to their daily toil.

Be sure the photographer has worked in a business environment before, can work will with people and under pressure.

The photographer must strike up a rapport with the subject and create strong images within moments of walking in a room. Business people are not models and your photographer needs to put them at ease and direct them into natural poses.

3. Being a Professional

A photographer should have a complete understanding of their camera and lighting equipment, its not an option to fumble around with equipment when the CEO is standing in front of the lens!

4. Sticking to the Brief

It’s important to stick to the photographic brief, and not re-imagine how the shoot could be interpreted. Images need to be on brand at all times. That’s not to say there is no room for creativity, but your photographer must get the shot list first.

5. Delivering to Deadlines (Or Better Still Before Deadlines)

Post production and turnaround times are at least as important as the shoot itself, the very hi res files from the cameras need to be carefully processed to get the absolute best from them. At the same time your photographer needs to know that the clock is ticking and you need your images as soon as possible to get value from your investment.
